JOSKO GRAVNER - The Free Spirit

57; winemaker, Gravner, Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Josko Gravner is his own man. No other Italian producer so embodies a spirit of freedom and independence. Whether praised or ridiculed, he has soldiered along his own path for more than 30 years. Gravner lives and works on the Italy/Slovenia border in the Collio hills in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. His vineyards cross those political boundaries as easily as he slips in and out of the two languages. He introduced barrrique-aged whites to the region in the 1980s, and now predominantly uses large clay amphorae. His wines are proof that his methods work.

He recently made another radical decision - to reduce his grape varieties to just two: the native white Ribolla Gialla and the local red, Pignolo. As ever, his ideas provoke thought - and respect.
